My Interest in GIP

Simon Zernicki-Glover

My debate experience and leadership roles (including co-leading the Poly Health Education Club, assistant section editing the Paw Print, debate team, moot court, and winning best-delegate at the United Nations Summer Institute at UCLA) awakened my interest in writing, dialogue, discussing human rights issues, and imagining solutions. However, from a young age, I have always desired to create a better future. It all started when I was eleven, and I won the prize for entrepreneur-ship in my school in Cambridge, England. After being shown photos of the effects of plastic pollution in our science class, I convinced our design and technology teacher to co-lead with me a workshop on how to turn used single-use plastic bottles into plant pots. With the help of the deputy director of my school, my grade turned over 70 bottles into pots with flowering plants. We earned £700 for selling the potted plants, which I chose to donate to the charity “Plastic Oceans,” - an organization whose goal is to end plastic pollution. Since then I have always promoted care for the environment and world around me. In fact, a few years later, in 2020, my friends and I founded a podcast discussing gender, race, and sexual discrimination; we titled it Polycast and sent our episodes to the Middle School. I still seek to reduce inequality and promote sustainability in my daily life; in fact, I recently co-led a dance workshop in coordination with the non-profit Club 21 for children with specialized cognitive needs. I believe my involvement in speech and debate, my fascination for learning more about the world, and my love for helping create a better future will contribute to my blogs, my execution of event planning, and the quality of the GIP program. I hope that the Global Scholars program will broaden and deepen my global perspectives by connecting me with both climate and equality activists. To develop as a global citizen, I want to continue learning about world issues. In attending GIP events and listening to capstone presentations, I can see that this program is excellent at doing just that. With my passion for creating a better world, I aim to leave a lasting impact with my capstone project.
